Grand Prize 2009

Foundation 2009 Grand Prize (€100,000)

In 2009, the Jury of the SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Foundation’s Water for All Competition awarded the prize to the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering (2iE) based in Ouagadougou, Burkina-Faso.

Collective Water Supply Stations (CWSS) provide a supply of running water from taps installed in a public space and equipped with metering facilities. As an alternative to individual connections and street fountains, the project should improve the water supply service, providing a sustainable supply of water at reasonable cost to disadvantaged populations in urban areas in Africa. Project trials have been under way since 2000 in a number of small towns in Burkina Faso and Mali, and the results have been very good.

"I am very proud that the International Institute for Water and Environmental Engineering has won the 2009 Grand Prize. I would like to congratulate the SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT Water for All Foundation on their initiative in launching an international competition encouraging and rewarding research to promote human development, and in particular for improving access to water services for the most disadvantaged communities."
Amadou HAMA MAIGA, Winning team manager, Deputy General Manager of 2iE
